The Relative Contribution of Emotional Regulation Strategies in Predicting Bullying among Female University Students

Abstract

The current research aims to reveal the level of both emotional regulation strategies and bullying among female university students. It also aims to identify the direction and extent of the relationship between bullying on the one hand, and emotional regulation strategies on the other hand, and also to identify the relative contribution of emotional regulation strategies in predicting bullying among female university students. The research sample consisted of (300) female students, whose ages ranged between (18-22) years, with an average of (20.04) and a standard deviation of (1.505). The research tools were represented by two scales: the emotional regulation strategies scale, and the bullying scale (prepared by the researcher and the supervisory committee). The results showed that the level of emotional regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression) among female university students was average, and that the level of bullying and its dimensions were low (at the minimum for this level), and that there was a moderate positive correlation between bullying and all its dimensions and emotional regulation strategies among female university students. The results of the regression analysis also showed that each of the regulation strategies Emotional regulation alone contributes to predicting bullying among female university students, but the two strategies together do not provide a predictive model. After interpreting and discussing the results, some recommendations and research proposals were reached.
