Abstract

The aim of the current research to reveal the effectiveness of the proposed strategy based on the information preparation theory in developing some critical reading skills among first-year secondary school students. The research group was selected from first-year secondary school students, and consisted of (60) female students from Sadat Secondary School for Girls and Sayeda Khadija Secondary School for Girls. They were divided into two groups: one experimental and the other control. The number of each group was (30) female students. The research followed the descriptive analytical approach in relation to defining critical reading, its concept, importance, and skills, and the information preparation theory, its concept, principles, and its relationship to critical reading and its relationship to the secondary stage, preparing the research tool, interpreting and discussing the results, and the experimental approach in relation to the research experiment and controlling its variables. The design of the two independent groups was used, and a list of critical reading skills, a teacher's guide, student activity sheets, and a test to measure critical reading skills were prepared. The research concluded that there were statistically significant differences between the average scores of the experimental group students and the scores of the control group students. The control group students in the post-application of the critical reading test as a whole and each main skill separately in favor of the experimental group, and the presence of statistically significant differences between the average scores of the experimental group students in the pre- and post-application of the critical reading test as a whole and each main skill separately in favor of the post-application; which indicates the effectiveness of the proposed strategy based on the information processing theory in developing critical reading skills among first-year secondary school students through the reading topics prescribed in the Arabic language curriculum for the first year of secondary school and free reading topics. The research also recommends preparing study units in the Arabic language curricula and teaching them using the proposed strategy for learners at various educational levels; which makes the study material more lively, active and effective and avoids the rigidity of the silent information.
